Tommy
D. Mayo, Owner and Founder of Tommy D. Mayo's Southern Gospel
Outreach based in the Northeast Texas city of Clarksville has been involved
in Southern Gospel Music for over 43 years.
Tommy, was born in Little Rock, Arkansas September 18, 1946 to fine
Christian parents. He was an only child. His parents were shape note music
teachers, musicians and singers as well.
His grandparents were music teachers, musicians and singers as well.
Tommy's parents and grandparents, were close friends for many years to the
famed quartet pianist "Smilin' Joe Roper" of the Melody Boys, Stamps and
Prophets Quartet fame. Through this friendship and bonding Smilin' Joe was
instrumental in Tommy's young life as a very young boy in teaching him the
piano. Smilin' Joe, was Tommy's mentor, friend and confidant and
wasresponsible for Tommy being in Southern Gospel Music today. Tommy always
attributes much of his career in the Gospel Music Industry to his mentor!!.
Like many young men, Tommy drifted off into the Country Music field for a
"season" playing his piano and playing Gospel Music became second choice.
However, at the age of 25 Tommy came to a "crossroad" in his life to make a
decision to remain in Country Music or Gospel Music....he chose Gospel and
has not regretted that "crossroad" decision....like many others, he has seen
the "valleys" as well as the "mountain tops"... the Mountain tops as he will
quickly tell you have been much more prominent!.
He formed his own quartet the Royal Heritage Quartet and was manager and
pianist. They traveled for 11 years before dis-banding. They never once had
a personal change in their tenure. Their dis-banding was due to college,
jobs and raising families and not for any negative reasons or discord. They
still get together from time to time and do appearances in Churches,
Revivals, Festivals and Home-Comings. They still find time to get together
and practice, just to keep them on their "toes" and "notes".
Tommy, later on became licensed and Ordained Minister and has pastored 3
Churches over the years.
Tommy, also became involved in Gospel Radio Stations over the years that
aired Southern Gospel Music...a couple of stations were not Gospel...but a
full time Country music format that allowed him to have successful radio
programs called "Brush Arbor Scene" and "Echoes of Joyful Praise". Tommy,
paid for his programs along with a few select Co-op sponsors helping out.
Basically, he could air and feature artists he chose too, especially
the up and coming new artists that had the talent and sound, to help them
and for listeners to become acquainted with their Music Ministry.
Tommy, has appreciated all of the response received with his programs on the
Country formatted stations due in part to listeners that had never heard
gospel music...but through a gospel song, the Holy Spirit worked and stopped
them from doing a negative act...also they became "Saved"!!.
In radio, he has been a DJ, Program Director and Station Manager. Tommy is
also a long time member of GMA (Gospel Music Association), SGMA (Southern
Gospel Music Association), SGMA (Southern Gospel Music Guild), KYOVA (Gospel
Singers Association and other Southern Gospel Organizations and serves on
Advisory Boards on a few.
He is also involved with www.gospelok.com
and is very proud of it's owner Daniel Graves and his lovely wife Courtney
who have an excellent website for Gospel Artists and other Ministries. Tommy
D. Mayo's Southern Gospel Outreach is a "featured" Ministry.
Tommy, thru the years has worn a coat of many colors and is a firm believer
that through Southern Gospel Music, the message of Jesus Christ is one of
the best "Gifts" that God has given to reach the Pre-Christian (Lost) as
well as to all the Christians of "all" Faiths who may be discouraged,
hurting and who may just need an "uplift" from the sometimes "trials" of
daily living!!...
Keep Looking Up and Keep the Faith!.
"I give all of
the Praises to the Lord for my successes throughout my lifetime. I look
forward to sharing the ministry of Southern Gospel Music with you all soon!
And until He comes, may God bless you abundantly!"
Tommy D. Mayo
"I will sing unto the LORD as long as I
live: I will sing praise to my God while I have my being."
